The National Green Tribunal (NGT) is a statutory body in India established on 18.10.2010 under the National Green Tribunal Act 2010 for effective and expeditious disposal of cases relating to environmental protection, conservation of forests and other natural resources, enforcement of any legal right relating to environment, and giving relief and compensation for damages to persons and property arising out of environmental violations.

The NGT is a specialized body equipped with the necessary expertise to handle environmental disputes involving multi-disciplinary issues. It has been mandated to make and endeavour for disposal of applications or appeals finally within six months of filing of the same.

The NGT has five places of sitting, namely:

1. Principal Bench, New Delhi
2. Eastern Bench, Kolkata
3. Central Bench, Bhopal
4. Western Bench, Pune
5. Southern Bench, Chennai

The NGT has played a significant role in raising awareness about environmental issues and in ensuring that environmental laws are properly enforced.
