World Wetlands Day is celebrated annually on February 2nd. It’s important to note that the date stays consistent year after year.
This day serves to raise awareness about the vital role wetlands play for both people and the planet. It also commemorates the adoption of the Convention on Wetlands, an international treaty signed in 1971 in Ramsar, Iran, for the conservation and wise use of wetlands. There are presently more than 2,400 Ramsar Sites globally, encompassing a total area exceeding 2.5 million square kilometers, which is larger than Mexico. This network of Ramsar Sites comprises various coastal and inland wetlands.
